Snowdon photographed some of the 20th century's most famous faces, from Diana, Princess of Wales to Jack Nicholson and Elizabeth Taylor, in a career that lasted more than six decades.

The former husband of Princess Margaret Lord Snowdon has died aged 86.

He died peacefully at his home on Friday.

Buckingham Palace said the queen had been informed of her former brother-in-law's death but did not comment further.

Upon his marriage he was given the title, Earl of Snowdon.

With no title by birth, divorced parents and a penchant for riding a motorbike, he was considered to be the first real "commoner" to Wednesday a king's daughter for 450 years.

Following a short engagement, they married on May 6, 1960 at Westminster Abbey, to much public support. These included the official portraits of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip during their 1957 tour of Canada.

Lord Snowdon and Princess Margaret had two children together before they separated, David Armstrong-Jones, Viscount Linley, and Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones.

He also worked in design, co-creating an aviary for London Zoo and inventing an electric wheelchair.

But the professional photographer - whose full name is Antony Charles Robert Armstrong-Jones - spent almost two decades at the heart of the Royal Family.

Lord Snowdon also had a daughter, Lady Frances Armstrong-Jones, with second wife, Lucy Lindsay-Hogg, from whom he split in 2000 as well as a son, Jasper, with the journalist Melanie Cable-Alexander.
