The entire 48-strong Democratic caucus voted against Ms DeVos and so did two Republican senators, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine.

Toomey voted in favor of her confirmation.

President Mike Pence could cast the deciding vote to confirm DeVos.

What will Betsy DeVos appointment as U.S. Education Secretary mean for MI? They cited her financial interest in organizations pushing for charter schools, though she has said she will divest those interests. For public school educators, and particularly science teachers, her confirmation is a nightmare realized. She will now lead a department entrusted with nurturing public education while she has actively campaigned for its destruction. In 1993, she worked to pass the first charter school bill in MI, and has since advocated to loosen restrictions on these schools in her home state, only to see students' performance plummet. "But I will listen to each of you on your ideas for how we can do better for students".

Undergraduate student Clare Moore spoke during the protest on similar concerns, saying she worries DeVos will focus on the needs of young people who are "already privileged". "Having worked closely with her in the past on issues in MI, we know that she has put the interests of kids before adults, parents before institutions, and students' success before politics".

Members of the University of Iowa community gathered on February 8, 2017, to voice concerns about Betsy DeVos' confirmation as Education secretary.

"While we support our students expressing their constitutional freedoms, we encourage students to attend school".

[T] he Department of Education has spent $2 trillion on elementary and secondary education with little substantial improvement in academic achievement or high school graduation rates. It's not time to celebrate. "Which is a clear misunderstanding of what the federal law is about and how that protects the civil rights of students with disabilities". But under charter and voucher systems, how many low-income students actually have access to alternative schools? Two GOP senators have announced plans to oppose her, which could result in a 50-50 Senate vote Tuesday. She has demonstrated both unfamiliarity and hostility toward public education, even calling public schools a "dead end".

Speaking to Education Department staff on Wednesday, DeVos said, " many, the events of the last few weeks have likely raised more questions and spawned more confusion than they have brought light and clarity". I am honored to be a soldier in that movement for children. The teachers unions would generate a similarly partisan floor vote on any school-choice measure.

Imani and her mom, along with countless others across MI, spent the past several months protesting DeVos' nomination for U.S. Secretary of Education and we now know they lost that fight.

"We have to disrupt this model, a quasi monopoly on education, there's too many kids it is not serving well. That makes this a sad day for children".

Betsy DeVos in January.

"If you look at what she's said, it's not based on her experience", Samaha said.

The board pledged that district employees will not to question the citizenship status of students or family members in the city's schools.

However, agency officials said the issue is nothing more than a technical glitch that is being addressed.

Fact is, the federal government accounts for about 9 percent of total public education funding across the country.
