President Donald Trump will be holding a rally in Melbourne Saturday afternoon in what is essentially a re-election campaign stop being promoted by his campaign.

Although Trump is literally years away from having anyone to actually campaign against, the event does have a sliver of a goal in that attendees must register online and provide personal information including their e-mail addresses, thereby giving the Trump camp new information on supporters from whom they can solicit campaign contributions down the road.

An administration official said Trump would rally supporters at an airport hangar there, the same venue where he held a rally in September.

I heard some jokes yesterday that Trump really just wanted to go back to his Mar-a-Lago resort for the third consecutive weekend, and tacked on a rally nearby to help justify his peripatetic habits, but I think there's more to this.

It is an ambitious move by the billionaire leader, who filed 2020 registration paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission on the same day of inauguration. The filing allows his campaign to accept donations from businesses while he's serving in the Oval Office.

But what's especially interesting about this week's rally is that it's apparently not a presidential event.

With the media in a frenzy over systemic leaking by the intelligence community, which revealed illegal wiretapping of his ousted National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, congressional Republicans are getting weak in the knees and calling for investigations into aides' potential ties to Russian Federation. The White House did not respond to request for comment.

Trump called the reports "non-sense" in a tweet.
