Comey wanted to reveal Russian meddling months before election

The damaging October surprise prompted then Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid to attack Comey in a fiery letter for his "partisan actions", accusing the top law-enforcement official of withholding "explosive information" linking Trump and his top advisers to the Kremlin for political reasons.

Months before the election, FBI Director James Comey tried to reveal that Russian Federation was interfering in America's electoral process in order to help Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton.

FBI Director James Comey reportedly tried to go public with the information about Russia's campaign to disrupt the U.S. presidential election last summer but Obama administration officials stopped him.

According to the report, Comey went to a situation room meeting in June or July and announced that he hoped to write an op-ed, presumably in a major newspaper, detailing Russian meddling in the elections.

"He had a draft of it or an outline", an unnamed source told Newsweek. Former Secretary of State John Kerry, Attorney General Loretta Lynch and DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson, among others, also were reportedly in attendance at the meeting.

Asked about Comey's push to write an op-ed over the summer, a spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Investigation said by email, "In general we have not been adding to the director's comments regarding Russian Federation at the March 20 hearing". "What do people think of this?'" said one of Newsweek's two sources for the story. "We further assess Putin and the Russian government developed a clear preference for President-elect Trump".

That's according to a report from Newsweek magazine.

The FBI and other US intelligence officials have since launched investigations into Trump's ties to Russia and whether members of his administration had been in contact with Russian envoys during the election. At the annual Intelligence and National Security Alliance Leadership dinner on Wednesday, Director Comey addressed the wave of criticism the intelligence community has faced over the past year, arguing that it is proof positive that it is doing its job.

"We're not on anybody's side ever", Comey said.

"We are not considering whose...functions will be helped by this or that".

"The challenge of people coming from places where we don't have those relationships is, as good as our systems might be, we're not going to have any dots to connect", Comey said.

Comey appeared to revel in his reputation as a truth-teller and an outsider in a city that cares little for either. "Most people are wearing glasses that filter the world according to side", he said. "But honestly, I don't care".

Noticeably absent from that letter, however, was FBI Director James Comey. The spokesman told CNN that the director would not testify without a formal invite. "The White House shut it down", the source said.
