A mountain lion may have gotten away with a dog Monday morning from the bedroom of a home in the unincorporated San Mateo County community of Pescadero, sheriff's officials said. That was until she saw a mountain lion escaping out the back door. "That's when I saw what I thought was our bigger dog walking in", Fought tells NBC Bay Area.
She explained their small dog - a Portuguese Podengo named Lenore - who had been sleeping at the foot of the bed, woke them up with her barking.
The adult witness told authorities she saw the shadow of an animal come into the room through the French doors, grab the dog from the bed, and walk out.
The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office issued a news release to make residents aware of the incident. She said they kept the room's French doors slightly open so that the dog could go outside as it needed.
Neighbors have been warned to be especially wary of mountain lions after one displayed such boldness.

The woman immediately called 911 and responders found large paw prints both outside in the dirt and indoors where she said she spotted the cat, Zuno said. "I knew it wasn't like Leo, because it wasn't her normal bark", Peso said. "Lenore did her attack barking, very vicious attack sound that she does when she's not liking something", said owner Vickie Fought. "What is unusual is the fact that this mountain lion got this close and actually went into the home". "We notified the California Department of Fish and Wildlife for any necessary follow up investigation". If attacked, people are told to fight back, according to the department. But Fought never expected a mountain lion to walk into their house.
Using a flashlight, the woman searched for the pooch but found only a trail of large, wet paw prints on the floor outside.
The SMSD says that this incident is a reminder to "lock and secure your home's doors and windows", and refers those with more questions on mountain lion behavior to this website.
"They prefer deer, but at the same time, they are predators and do hunt", he said.
