"Coming inbound at a high rate of speed like that and manning weapons, despite clear warnings from the ship, is obviously provocative behavior", a USA official told Fox News.
The Iranian vessel approached the USS Mahan with its weapons manned, prompting the US destroyer to alter its course, sound a danger alarm, fire flares, and man its weapons.
In this handout released by the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer USS Mahan (DDG 72) prepares to pass under the Pell Clairborne Bridge as the ship departs Naval Station Newport August 19, 2011 in Newport, Rhode Island.
Iranian authorities did not immediately report the incident on Wednesday.
An American destroyer was forced to alter its course when approached in an "unprofessional" and "provocative" manner by a vessel belonging to the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard in the Persian Gulf on Monday.
In January, the USS Mahan fired warning shots at the Revolutionary Guards in the Straight of Hormuz, a key gateway for global oil supplies.

The Mahan fired no warning shots in the process; the occurrence is not unheard of on the Gulf, either.
During the January clash, USS Mahan fired warning shots and used radio calls, flares, bells and whistles to signal for the ships to stay away but when there was no response a United States helicopter dropped smoke grenades.
Iran's belligerence in the Persian Gulf continues as it again threatened a US Navy destroyer.
Iran has been trying to make its presence notable in the Persian Gulf over the years especially along the Strait of Hormuz. In 2016, after the Obama deal was signed, 35 incidents with Iranian military forces that were deemed as either "unsafe" or unprofessional occurred.
This latest incident is among a growing list of Iranian provocations against U.S. forces, mostly maritime, in the region.
