"The test-fire proved to the full all the technical specifications of the rocket. like guidance and stabilization systems. and reconfirmed the reliability of new rocket engine under the practical flight circumstances", KCNA said.

Moon, a strong apologist for former Presidents Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun's Sunshine Policy, which highlighted engagement with the North, took a more critical tone Sunday, calling the missile test a "blatant violation of the UN Security Council resolutions" and a "grave threat" to the Korean Peninsula and the worldwide security.

The launch jeopardises new South Korean president Moon Jae-in's willingness to talk to the North, and came as US, Japanese and European navies gather for joint war games in the Pacific.

The country's leader, Kim Jong Un, supervised the launch of the Hwasong-12 missile that reached an altitude of 2,111.5 kilometers (1,312 miles) and flew 787 kilometers (489 miles), KCNA said.

North Korea is believed to be developing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of carrying a nuclear warhead and reaching the mainland United States.

The U.N. Security Council late Monday expressed "utmost concern" at what it called North Korea's "highly destabilizing behavior and provocative defiance" of council resolutions demanding a halt to all nuclear-related tests.

U.S. President Donald Trump warned in an interview with Reuters this month that a "major, major conflict" with North Korea was possible.

"The greatest responsibility for bringing North Korea to its senses. lies with China", Turnbull says.

The raid came a day after a USA service member was killed while supporting an operation by Somalia's military in the same area. The random attack that took the Navy SEAL's life is all too common in Somalia, according to experts with Minnesota ties.

It was North Korea's seventh missile test since Trump took office on January 20, although most of the others were considered failures.

"Successive administrations over 25 years have attempted to engage China unsuccessfully, but, for the first time, the Chinese appear to be focused on containing the nuclear ambitions of North Korea, so I think the [Trump] administration is pursuing a correct strategy", Faso said. The North did not specify what proper choice it had in mind. It said the missile fell into the Japan Sea after flying more than 700 kilometers.

The North has successfully launched long-range rockets twice to put objects into space, although many experts believed it was some years away from mastering the re-entry technology needed to flawless an ICBM.

An undated photo released 15 May 2017 by North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) showing North Korean leader Kim Jong Un (C) viewing a missile, believed to be Hwasong-12.

To actually deliver such a missile, Pyongyang would have to have advanced technology in both miniaturizing its nuclear weapons as well as in protecting a nuclear warhead from being destroyed upon re-entry in the earth's atmosphere.

"If the United States awkwardly attempts to provoke the DPRK, it will not escape from the biggest disaster in [.] history", KCNA quoted Kim as saying, referring to the North's formal name of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The foreign ministry in a statement on Monday said by doing this, North Korea has violated its obligation under the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.

Several South Korean analysts, including Lee Illwoo, a Seoul-based commentator on military issues, said the missile flew higher and for a longer period than any other the North has ever test-fired.
