Ambassador Sergey Kislyak reported to his superiors in Moscow that Kushner, son-in-law and confidant to then-President-elect Trump, made the proposal during a meeting on December 1 or 2 at Trump Tower, according to intercepts of Russian communications that were reviewed by USA officials.
Kelly said that if such a line of communication was set up, the critical thing would have been for Kushner and other transition officials to understand that the information provided by the Russians might be intentionally false. He is respected by everyone and is working on programs that will save our country billions of dollars.
Trump also said that "many of the leaks coming out of the White House are fabricated lies".
Nevertheless, some critics have called for Kushner's security clearance to be revoked, while others say he should temporarily step aside while his ties to Moscow are being reviewed.
People familiar with the interactions told The New York Times the relationship began to fray after Trump fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, which Kushner had strongly advocated, and because of his repeated attempts to oust Stephen Bannon, Trump's chief strategist, as well as the president's press secretary Sean Spicer.
Ivanka Trump, perhaps the President's most trusted adviser, was not involved in the writing of that statement, the administration official said.

Trump admin to extend protections for Haitians 6 months
The decision to extend TPS for only six months left some Haitians terrified about their future. A final decision about the long-term fate of those immigrants will be decided at a later date.
US President Donald Trump says he has "total confidence" in his embattled senior adviser and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, following reports Kushner tried to set up a secret channel of communications with Russian Federation before Trump took office. It is journalistic protocol to restrict the identification of sources when requested, and where necessary.
The piece was based on one anonymous source who claimed that the Russians, and not Kushner, broached the idea of the secret backchannel during the meeting, which was held at Trump Tower and was attended by Russia's ambassador and retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn. He is considered a person of interest, and the FBI is investigating his alleged role in setting up communications between the Trump campaign and Russian operatives. Whether this is part of a legal strategy or just a convenient cover story instead of admitting that he is being fired because he is a liability, Trump will not be explaining publicly that he and Kushner are parting ways professionally.
President Donald Trump is considering overhauling his White House staff and bringing back top campaign strategists, frustrated by what he views as his team's inability to contain the burgeoning crisis involving alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
Meanwhile, the White House is shaking up its communications team. So reports the Washington Post. Will Ivanka and Kushner return to NY as a diversion, or will there be more shake-ups in the Trump administration?
