Scalise underwent a second surgery for internal injuries and a broken leg - his third procedure overall - and remained in critical condition but had shown improvement, MedStar Washington Hospital Center said in a statement on Thursday.

Scalise, of Louisiana, underwent surgery Wednesday night to fix a broken hip and another procedure to stem heavy bleeding.

The hospital says the Louisiana congressman "will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time".

The Congressional Baseball Game, played 36 hours after a gunman's attack on Republican lawmakers at their baseball practice, was an attempt at unity and an act of defiance in the wake of the shooting. Scalise was reported to have been tended to by Rep. Brad Wenstrup of OH, a US Army Reserve doctor who served in Iraq, before his treatment at the hospital.

Trump visited the Louisiana congressman at the hospital Wednesday night, and Vice President Mike Pence paid a visit Thursday morning.

Capitol Police officer David Bailey, who chased down the gunman despite being wounded himself, hobbled out to the pitcher's mound on crutches to throw out the ceremonial first pitch of the game.

Scalise, 51, and three others were wounded when a man identified as James Hodgkinson, 66, from the St. Louis suburb of Belleville, Illinois, opened fire on the lawmakers.

Hodgkinson's apparent Facebook page included strong criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration.

Sava said he told Scalise's family that "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his back yard with his family". "I think Dems will win the baseball game, but I think everyone wins tonight".

Mr Scalise, the House Majority Whip, remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Trump says Scalise "continues his very fearless fight", but adds: "it's been much more hard than people even thought at the time".

The annual Congressional Baseball Game pits Republicans against Democrats, but this year the focus has turned to showing unity in the wake of the shooting.

At the game Thursday night, U.S. Capitol Police checked bags with dogs in tow, in an atmosphere that attendees said seemed particularly alert. Several people stooped and kneeled down to write well wishes to the wounded.

The game, held at Nationals Park. has been a congressional tradition for more than a century.

Townhall's thoughts and prayers are with Rep. Scalise, Matt Mika, Zach Barth, and Agents Bailey and Griner as they continue to heal. "We have an Italian American connection", Pelosi said.

LSU officials say the university sent t-shirts, hats, towels, and other items for congressional members to wear for the game to show support for Scalise.

Doctors say House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (skuh-LEES') has a good possibility of recovery after he was at "imminent risk of death" from a gunshot wound to the hip two days ago. When I talk to lawmakers who are on the teams, both the Democratic team and the Republican team yesterday, they talk about it as being one of the highlights of their year.

Wednesday, they said the IL resident had been living out of his vehicle in the D.C. area since March.
