Israel on Saturday responded harshly to errant Syrian army fire that hit the Israeli side of the Golan Heights. The spokesman did not say whether the errant fire from Syria consisted of mortar rounds, artillery shells or bullets.

The IDF video contradicts a Syrian military claim carried by Syrian state-run media that the Israeli strikes had targeted "services facilities and residential buildings in the surroundings of al-Baath city in Quenitra".

"This was a vigorous response to mortar fire at our territory", Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday morning at the start of the weekly Cabinet meeting.

Israel has occupied most of Syria's Golan Heights since the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

Israel launched strikes on Syrian military positions Saturday, close to the two countries' disputed border in the Golan Heights, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

However, the Israeli army denied the allegations and released footage purportedly showing two machine guns and one tank being targeted and hit. The source did not mention Syrian fire into Israel and said the Israeli strike was in support of jihadist rebels. It subsequently annexed the strategic plateau overlooking northern Israel, but that annexation is not global recognized.

Around 510 square km of the Golan are under Syrian control. The cooperation began when the Israelis began assisting Syrian fighters, including alleged "Islamist extremists", through medical care at Israeli hospitals, in a relationship that soon led to direct funding for fighters for salaries, ammunition and weapons.

Later in the day, a source on the ground told RIA Novosti that the Israeli Air Forces struck the Syrian government forces when the troops have been repelling a massive attack of the al-Nusra Front terrorists.
