Mississippi's Republican Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann said last week that he had not yet received the letter, but said the commission should "jump in the Gulf of Mexico".

The office of Gov. Henry McMaster said the election commission should comply with the request as far as it is legally able to.

Louisiana Secretary of State Tom Schedler will not turn over voter identification information as requested by President Donald Trump's voting commission.

NBC reporter Brad Jaffy alerted Twitter to a statement from the office of Maryland's attorneys general rebuking the Trump administration's request for voter records, and a Mic report detailed the CT secretary of state's inquisition of the administration regarding why they need the information. The president lost the popular vote to his rival by almost 3 million. And, it was recently confirmed by the report issued by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS), comprised of the chief election officers of all 50 states.

Two of the states that said they'll only provide some of the information requested by the commission are OH and CT.

"We'll see what the law requires us to provide and not to provide", Whitmire said.

Officials in 10 states and the District of Columbia said they would not comply at all with the request.

On Friday, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the refusal by state officials to comply was "mostly a political stunt" and that the commission is asking for publicly available data.

"Repeating incessantly a false story of expansive voter fraud, and then creating a commission to fuel that narrative, does not make it any more true", he continued. The commission purports to investigate voter fraud, which numerous studies confirm has not happened on the scales of "millions" as the Trump administration has suggested.

Hasen said that whether the commission gets the requested data or not, he expects it to conclude that voter fraud is a huge problem which needs to be addressed by laws tightening identification requirements and restricting voter registration methods.

"Secretary of State Kobach is a registered voter in Kansas", Effingham said in a statement. Beyond stupid? Or representing the privacy interests of Arkansas voters?

Kobach has had legal troubles in the past in his battle against voting fraud.
