Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) has sent a letter to President Donald Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., to testify publicly before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

In a letter requesting the information from the Department of Homeland Security and the State Department, Grassley says that Veselnitskaya was granted a parole letter in 2015, after having initially been denied a visa, to participate in a court case in the United States.

In the June 2016 emails, the intermediary says the attorney has negative information about Clinton, who would go on to lose to Donald Trump in the election, that is part of the Russian government's efforts to help Trump in the campaign.

A person close to Manafort said that he hasn't yet received a letter from the committee about a possible interview.

Trump Jr. said Tuesday he would be "happy" to work with a Senate Intelligence Committee now investigating alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election after he himself acknowledged meeting a Kremlin-linked lawyer during his father's campaign.

Tuesday morning, Trump Jr. posted an email chain on his Twitter account documenting the arrangement. Willfully failing to report under the Foreign Agent Registration Act is a felony, but the Justice Department rarely prosecutes violations.

"If he [Manafort] comes before our committee, and we'll subpoena him if necessary", Grassley said.

But Donald Trump said Wednesday that, while he didn't know about the meeting until it was reported in the press, he didn't fault his son for taking it.

"It was in the previous administration [and] if there had been enforcement of the immigration laws, she wouldn't have been in the country", said Grassley. "I think many people would have held that meeting", he said.

Lawyers for President Donald Trump have raised the possibility that the request for the meeting could have been part of a smear campaign against him, trying to tie him and his campaign to Russian Federation. He was told the Russian government had information that could "incriminate" Clinton and her dealings with Russia.

"The information they suggested they had about Hillary Clinton I thought was Political Opposition Research", Trump Jr. wrote in a statement that was published alongside the correspondence.
