Israel refused to remove the detectors, claiming the security measures are similar to procedures taken at other holy sites around the world.
The Middle East Quartet of Russian Federation, the US, the European Union and the United Nations issued a statement Saturday that expressed great concern for "the escalating tensions and violent clashes" in and around the Old City, where the revered place of worship is located.
Palestinians argue the security measure is a sign of creeping Israeli control over the holy site.
Violent clashes between Israelis and Palestinians have left at least six people dead.
Clashes also erupted at the Qalandia checkpoint, the main Palestinian passageway between Ramallah and Jerusalem, where Israeli security forces fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the crowds.
"How sweet death is for the sake of God, his prophet and for al-Aqsa Mosque", he wrote, referring to the increased Israeli restrictions on Palestinians visiting Islam's third holiest mosque in Jerusalem.
Netanyahu on Saturday denounced the assault as an "act of terrorism committed by a reprehensible person incited by wild hatred", and urged Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to condemn the attack, Xinhua news agency reported.
