United States hits Iran with more sanctions in response to space launch

US says Iran rocket test breaches UN resolution

The U.S. National Air and Space Intelligence Center echoed that in a report issued just last month.

According to Iranian state television, the rocket launched into space Thursday can carry a 550-pound payload. The US government says the technology used in the launch is inherently created to be able to carry a nuclear payload, in violation of UN Security Council resolutions.

The six Shahid Hemmat Industrial Group subsidiaries the ageny called "central" to the Iranian missile program, are responsible for a range of components to Iran's ballistic missile program, including the development of structural components, liquid-propellant, missile engines, guidance systems, research and ground control systems. Iran's Ministry of Information and Communications Technology said earlier that the country has plans to send two satellites into space by the end of the current Iranian calendar year, ending on March 20, 2018, according to Press TV.

The sanctions freeze any assets the entities may have in the United States and prohibit Americans from doing business with them.

Yet Iran's foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif said Friday his country is complying with the nuclear deal that Iran struck with the USA and other world powers in 2015.

The sanctions in that bill also target Iran's missile development programs as well as human rights abuses.

Iran's foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, on Friday denied Tehran had missiles created to carry nuclear warheads.

A United States defense official confirmed the launch to CNN and said the U.S. is still assessing how successful it was.

"Rhetoric and actions from the US show bad faith", Zarif said.

It has recently become known that US President Donald Trump's administration insists on inspecting "suspicious" military facilities in Iran. "Iran is not and will not be developing nuclear weapons; so by definition can not develop anything created to be capable of delivering them", he tweeted.

Steven Mnuchin, US treasury secretary, said the sanctions illustrate deep US concerns about Iran's missile testing and other actions. And last week, the USA certified for a second time under Trump that Iran is in compliance.
