Sharapova returned from a 15-month doping ban in April, but skipped the entire grass-court season due to injury.

Sharapova, whose ranking has fallen to 171 in the world, received a wild card into the premier level tournament in Stanford, where she was tested Monday by the 80th-ranked Brady.

"Unfortunately, I have to withdraw from today's match", the five-time Grand Slam champion said.

Sharapova suffered the injury while playing in her first United States match in more than two years, defeating American Jennifer Brady 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 in her Monday opener at Stanford.

After Brady recovered from a slow start clinching the second set, she paid for missing two break points early in the third set, as Sharapova won six straight games.

"I had a bit of a letdown but that's the way it is", Sharapova said.

It marked the second time in three months that Sharapova's comeback has been interrupted by injury having also retired from her second round match at the Italian Open in mid-May after injuring her left thigh.

She had not played in the USA since March of 2015 due in part to a 15-month doping suspension for the use of meldonium. After yesterday's scan, the doctor has recommended I don't risk further injury.

That will now go to Toronto's Bianca Andreescu.

"This is definitely tough for Maria", said Bank of the West Classic Tournament Director Vickie Gunnarsson.

The Russian was slated to play seventh-seeded Lesia Tsurenko on Wednesday. "We know many of our fans were excited to see her play".
