Outspoken Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke, who built a following among conservatives nationally with his provocative social media presence and strong support of Donald Trump, resigned on Thursday.
But Mark Belling, a conservative Milwaukee radio host, reported that Clarke told him he was quitting to accept a new position that would be announced next week.
Milwaukee County Clerk George Christenson said the letter doesn't give the reason for Clarke's resignation.
There's no word yet on why the sheriff chose today to tender his resignation or what his next moves may be.
Some Wisconsin conservatives had encouraged Clarke to challenge U.S. Sen.
On Sunday, President Trump promoted Clarke's book, "Cop Under Fire: Moving Beyond Hashtags of Race, Crime and Politics for a Better America". Clarke had previously accepted a middle-management job in Trump's Department of Homeland Security, only to rescind that decision weeks later without explanation. The sheriff could not immediately be reached for comment. Clarke spoke at the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio.
In May, Clarke said he had been offered a top spot at DHS - a statement that the department declined to confirm after an inquest recommended criminal charges against seven county jail staffers in the dehydration death of an inmate who went without water for seven days.
