Anderson followed up his Friday feat of becoming the first England bowler and only sixth in history to take 500 Test wickets by finishing with a return of seven for 42 in 20.1 overs as West Indies were dismissed for 177 in their second innings on the third day of the third Test.
That left England with a meagre target of 107 and they finished on 107/1 off 28 overs as they took a three-match series 2-1. Those may not be numbers to make Australia tremble but, when supplemented by the confirmed abilities of players such as Anderson, Ben Stokes (Man of the Match at Lord's) and Root himself, it gave the captain cause for optimism. "I think those learnings and the manner that we won after that is great to ahead of what is going to be a very challenging winter".
"He said at the start of the summer, he's desperate to carry on playing as much as he can for England while he can and I think he has just shown what he is still capable of", Root said of Anderson.
"In the second innings Jimmy was outstanding". The 35-year-old is bowling better than ever, and, bowling from the Nursery End, he picked up a Test match career best 7-42 amid jubilant scenes at headquarters. "My family have been here, my friends have been here, and to share the moment with guys I have played over 100 Tests with as well is extra special", the Lancashire paceman added.
Shai Hope, the hero of West Indies' Headingley victory, made a belligerent 62, but the game appeared to be up for the tourists when he was removed by Anderson.
Anderson remains England's dear old thing and finishes with 39 wickets at an average of 14.10 in seven Tests. That was accorded to Henry Blofeld, the plummy-voiced Old Etonian who is retiring after 45 years on radio's Test Match Special, during a rapturous lap of honour wearing a bright lime jacket, pink shirt and fuschia pants.
England (2nd innings): A. Cook lbw b Bishoo 17, M. Stoneman (not out) 40, T. Westley (not out) 44.

Takeaways from USC vs. Western Michigan
Darnold will experience his first season opener as starting quarterback at USC and many believe it will be his last. On the whole, the entire USC offense looked disjointed until the fourth quarter.
Trump to Talk Tax Reform, but Don't Expect Specifics, Officials Say
Trump says in Springfield, Missouri , that his tax overhaul plan will be "pro-growth, pro-jobs, pro-worker and pro-American". Republican Congressional leaders and the White House have yet to reach an agreement on the details of the tax plan.
Batting continued to be a survivalist pursuit - at least until England completed a low-pressure chase - despite more leisurely conditions on a Saturday when the sunshine was only intermittently broken by scudding clouds.
Bowling from the Nursery End, where the eight-foot slope across the ground naturally takes the ball away from a right-handed batsman's off stump, Anderson found Roston Chase's edge, with Bairstow, the wicketkeeper, holding onto a simple catch. The home side resumed the day at 46 for four, trailing West Indies 77 runs. Jermaine Blackwood lived dangerously - he was badly dropped by Broad at mid-off and then given out lbw to Broad only for DRS to detect an inside edge - but still managed only five runs before also being caught by Bairstow.
But Broad did hold on to a chance at mid-on off the bowling of Toby Roland-Jones to send West Indies into lunch on 153 for six.
Head coach Trevor Bayliss said: "There are two or three positions that will take more discussion than the others but I can't see us going outside the people who have played in the last 12-18 months".
Shai Hope held the key to the West Indies staying in the game but he received little in the way of support.
"I'm extremely proud, can't really fault the guys for effort", he said. "He is a massive part of our dressing room and I am sure he will be for a long time to come".
