The NSC chief was commenting on the search for the former premier who fled the country in the face of a lawsuit stemming from the rice pledging scheme introduced by her government.

Yingluck could be sentenced to as much as 10 years in prison if found guilty of negligence over a costly rice subsidy scheme that helped to bring her to power in an election in 2011.

Yingluck had pleaded innocent and had accused the military government of political persecution.

A military coup removed Shinawatra from office in 2014.

Her whereabouts remain a mystery since her failure to appear at a similar court proceeding last month.

Yingluck's administration took the idea much further. "I have spies", he said, adding that to his knowledge Ms Yingluck has not sought asylum overseas.

While the Shinawatra family has dominated politics, their leadership has repeatedly been knocked down by coups and court rulings backed by elites, triggering repeated protests, Channel News Asia says.

Thitinan Pongsudhirak, director of the Institute of Security and International Studies at Chulalongkorn University, said the Puea Thai Party was now "rudderless".

The ruling had initially been scheduled for August 25 but was postponed after Yingluck failed to attend.

According to media reports, she is widely believed to have fled to Dubai where her billionaire brother, ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is living in self-imposed exile.
