It was a 94th title for the Swiss legend, drawing him level with the great Ivan Lendl, and the 36-year-old is now determined to land his seventh World Tour Finals crown and first since 2011 when the season comes to its thrilling climax next month.
"I don't know what my expectations were going in", Federer said.
"It's been a tough week, five straight matches is always a test and a challenge for anybody's body, especially with the pressure rising", he said.
"I feel very happy for the things I have achieved after everything that's happened to me to be able to come here and do well - it's very important for me".
'I wasn't here past year because of injuries, so it's just so, so nice to be back in Shanghai, ' said Federer, who will now turn his attention to the ATP Finals in London next month.
"In a way not surprising because I felt good all week..."
It was the first time in the duo's storied rivalry that Federer has beaten Nadal five times in a row and the comprehensive manner in which he dispatched the current world No 1 suggested he has finally solved the puzzle against a player he's struggled against so often in the past.
"Of course was not the best match for me of the week".

In taking down his longtime rival, Nadal, Federer captured his fifth "Big Title" of the season, winning two Grand Slams at the Australian Open and Wimbledon as well as earning an ATP World Tour-leading third Masters 1000 trophy.
The timeless Federer rubbished that notion as he seared his way to a 5-3 first-set lead.
Nadal had nearly blitzed through the field on his way to the final and was seeking his second title in China following his win in Beijing the previous week, but went down tamely 6-4, 6-3 to the Swiss ace on Sunday (15 October). He broke Nadal's serve again on a second break point in the fifth game of the second set when Nadal sailed a backhand crosscourt wide.
Nadal still leads the ATP rankings by almost 2,000 points.
Nadal's defeat sees Federer close the gap at the top of the world rankings as the year approaches its climax.
His triumph in Beijing last weekend was also his sixth of the year as he continues to defy doubts about his fitness following repeated injuries. When somebody plays better than you, sport is not very hard.
"I could maybe have done some things better", said Nadal.
He declined to say if he had been hampered by a problem with his right knee, which had a bandage on it during the match. I really want to win the World Tour finals. "After losing final is not the moment".
