Former Manchester City forward Robinho is sentenced to nine years in jail for sexual assault.

It added that "all legal steps" were "already being taken regarding this decision".

The reports claim that the former AC Milan forward, 33, and five others were convicted for an attack on an Albanian girl in a Milan nightclub in January 2013, when Robinho was playing in Italy.

Robinho, 33, who now plays with Atlético Mineiro in Brazil, pleaded not guilty via his lawyer and did not appear at any of the court hearings in northern Italy.

The Brazilian has the right of appeal and the sentence will not be enforced until that process has been completed, according to Sky Sports.

Robinho had previously been accused of sexual assault while at City in 2009 but was later cleared. The other four men had not been found by Italian police, ANSA said.

Robinho's lawyer, Marisa Alija, issued a statement saying that "We clarify that he has already defended himself from these allegations, and insist he had no participation in that episode".

Robinho joined City from Real Madrid for £32.5million in 2008 but struggled to adapt to Premier League football.

However, he failed to live up to expectations at City and left the club after one and a half seasons, joining Santos on loan before making a permanent move to Milan.

The attacker did go on to win the Serie A title with the Italian side, teaming up with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Antonio Cassano to conquer the division.

He now plies his trade back in his homeland with Atletico Mineiro.
