Numerous attacks, some of which were carried out by the local branch of the Islamic State terrorist organization, are aimed at police and security forces in the Sinai Peninsula. Sufism is a mystical branch of Islam that some ultra-orthodox Muslims consider heretical.

Although have already been a prime target of terrorism over the past years, India condemned the mosque attack, saying the "heinous" terror act is a "stark reminder of the need to develop a global strategy to fight terrorism".

Local media also reported the closure of the Arish-Rafah road, further east.

However, mosque attacks are relatively rare in Egypt.
