It's known as one of the holiest cities in Christianity, the place where the Angel Gabriel told Mary she was pregnant with the son of God, and the city where Jesus was raised.

The move was hailed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and by leaders across much of the Israeli political spectrum, and condemned by the vast majority of the global community.

Ali Salam, the mayor of Nazareth, has announced that the city won't be hosting any festivities for this year's Christmas celebration because the actions of US President Donald Trump have apparently whisked away "the joy of the holiday".

"Our identity and faith aren't up for debate", Mr. Salam said during a press conference Thursday, Newsweek reported.

"We have chose to cancel the traditional Christmas singing and dancing because we are in a time of dispute, because of what Trump has said about Jerusalem", city spokesman Salem Sharara said. Salam also called Trump "wretched" and said he had stabbed Palestinians in the back. Brotherly covenant referred to Salam's announcement as a "cynical move to take advantage of Christian residents", TPS reported.

Today, however, around two-thirds of the population in Nazareth is Muslim, according to sources.

In reaction to the US' recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, the powers that be in the Christian pilgrimage site of Nazareth announced their intention to cancel Christmas "artistic performances". Newsweek reported that the cancellation will impact the local economy "severely", as tens of thousands of people usually travel to the town during the Christmas season for the festivities.

The move was hailed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and by leaders across much of the Israeli political spectrum, and condemned by the vast majority of the global community.

Mr Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital city, was a significant United States policy change. Muslims oppose the move as they see East Jerusalem as a future capital for Palestine.

Evangelical Christians in the USA were a driving force behind recognising Jerusalem as Israel's capital, but Christian leaders across the world denounced the move.
