They waited at RDU for hours only to learn their flight was delayed until Monday morning.

A sudden power outage at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport brought the facility to a grounding halt around 1 p.m. Sunday. The news release also said the outage may have been caused by a fire in at Georgia Power underground electrical facility.

Georgia Power had announced at 6:30 p.m. that it expected to have power restored to the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport by midnight Sunday, according to a tweet from the City of Atlanta.

Atlanta is one of the busiest airports in the world and has lots of flights to and from Orlando and Tampa daily.

While power has been restored to the world's busiest airport, the travel woes are expected to linger for days at US airports, including Logan. She shot this image at 1:10 p.m. ET.

Delta canceled about 1,000 flights Sunday and 400 more on Monday, in many cases because the pilots and airplanes were in the wrong places.

Brittny Dettro said she was waiting to board a flight from Atlanta to Milwaukee when the power went out in Terminal B early Sunday afternoon. That means the backups will slowly, but surely be getting back on track as well.

In one video, passengers at an airport terminal were seen sitting in the dark as they awaited instructions over the public address system.

Los Angeles is up in flames and ritzy homes are ablaze

Some passengers told CNN that airport and airline staff offered no updates as hours passed, leaving people scanning their phones and tablets for information. Both of those flights were set to travel to Atlanta.

Thousands arrived at Atlanta's airport before sunrise Monday to find long lines at ticket counters.

Delta Air Lines lost power in August 2016, causing more than 2,000 flight cancellations over several days.

The passenger who shot the footage, Natalie Seitz, 23, of Queens, New York, said her Delta flight to Cleveland was canceled Sunday afternoon.

Georgia Power has confirmed they have crews in the field working to determine the cause of the problem. The airline also diverted three planes that were headed to Atlanta when the outage struck, sending them instead to Dallas, Nashville and back to Philadelphia. The FAA said the tower could operate normally but flights were affected because airport equipment in the terminals was not working. At one point, there were at least 40 planes stuck on the runway and tarmac.

Klein and her fellow passengers would be stranded on the tarmac for upwards of 7 hours before being allowed to deplane.

At Southwest Airlines, about 70 Atlanta departures out of 120 scheduled for Sunday were cancelled, an airline spokesman said in an email. On average, 275,000 passengers pass through the airport each day.
