Facebook has just released its bi-annual transparency report, which shows, among other things, all the data requests it received in the first half of this year.

The number of requests raised by 25.7 percent in first half of 2017 from the 26,014 made in the second half of 2016, said Facebook.

More than half of the requests came with demands that the person whose information was requested not be told about it.

U.S. government requests for Facebook user data were more than double the 16,823 Google received in the period. In the second half of 2016, which is July to December period, India's data requests stood at 7,289, which shows the number has been steadily increasing.

There has also been a slight increase in the percentage of requests that have prompted data to be disclosed. Facebook said 217,265 of content on its social network were removed after it acted on 81 percent of 14,279 claims in the first half of the year.

Facebook continues to see increased requests for user data from governments worldwide, according to its latest transparency report.

Figures provided by Facebook suggest it handed over data in 85% of requests from USA law enforcement and 90% in the UK. The Indian government, agencies also made 163 emergency data requests and asked for access to 262 user data accounts under this category.

Content removal requests for violating local law rose a massive 304 percent globally, from 6,944 to 28,036, however this was due largely to a video of school shooting in Mexico in January.

Facebook also revealed that there were 52 disruptions of Facebook services in nine countries in the first half of 2017, compared to 43 such instances in 20 countries in the second half of 2016. So, we scrutinize each request for legal sufficiency, no matter which country is making the request, and challenge those that are deficient or overly broad.

It, however, did not say exact;y what kind of information Dhaka had requested for. In the first six months of 2013, when the transparency reports first began, approximately 62 percent were granted. The company stated that they are concerned about the internet disruptions, which can be a hurdle to the businesses and restrict people from sharing and communicating with their family and friends.
