"We are in contact with at least ten countries, some of them in Europe" to discuss the move, deputy foreign minister Tzipi Hotovely told public radio.

The demonstrators were protesting Washington's decision to officially recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, a move that sparked outrage and a wave of anti-American riots in some Arab and Muslim-majority countries.

Other countries named amid the speculation of the Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem move included the Philippines, Romania and South Sudan.

Morales said in a brief post on his official Facebook page that he made the decision after speaking earlier in the day with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Reuters reported. "So far we have only seen the beginning", she said.

Guatemala and Israel were joined by Honduras, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Togo in voting with the United States and opposing the measure.

Guatemala's president announced on Christmas Eve that the Central American country will move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, becoming the first nation to follow the lead of U.S. President Donald Trump in ordering the change.

Meanwhile, Palestinian authorities denounced the decision.

Israel seized the eastern part of Jerusalem in the 1967 Six Day War and later annexed it in a move not recognised by the worldwide community.

As a sequel to that, the UN General Assembly voted to adopt a non-binding resolution on the status of Jerusalem. In a move never recognized by the global community, it annexed the entire city in 1980, claiming it as the Jewish state's "eternal and undivided" capital.

In a December 4 address from the White House, Trump defied worldwide warnings and insisted that after repeated failures to achieve peace a new approach was long overdue, describing his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the seat of Israel's government as merely based on reality.

"Thank you Guatemala for your important decision to move your Embassy to Jerusalem!" wrote ministry spokesperson Emmanuel Nahshon on Twitter Monday morning.
