Intelligence officials said India was capable of inflicting heavy damage on Pakistan. Also, the reports are coming that a teenage girl and a soldier were injured in Poonch.

"There is a Hindi saying in Bihar "latkhor" (addicted to being beaten), and similarly Pakistan is "latkhor" and thus proper reply would be given to them", he added. He said the "illegitimate use of force by the Indian forces in Kashmir" had "miserably failed to suppress indigenous freedom struggle".

Forty-two-year-old Havildar Roshan Lal, a resident of Samba district, 27-year-old Riflemen Ramavatar of Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh and Subham Singh (23) of J&K's Kathua district were also killed.

The NC leader said that the Vajpayee government in consultation with Pakistan gave a ceasefire agreement which needs to be restored. The shelling from across the border which started this morning and was continuing intermittently, a police official said earlier.

Highlighting the seriousness of the situation, officials said 860 ceasefire violations were recorded for the entire past year.

Veeri said the process of reconciliation initiated by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vaypayee in 2003 needs be taken forward for everlasting peace in the State. Yet, both sides continue to fire shots across the so-called Line of Control (LoC) a de facto border between Kashmir and Pakistan agreed upon by Pakistan and India.

In 2017, there were around 860 ceasefire violations along the LoC and 120 along the International Border, the highest number in the past 15 years.
