Daiichi Koutsu said it is hoping the expansion of Uber's service in Japan will help the country address the rising number of unlicensed taxis in big cities.

In a statement, the ride-hailing giant has announced that it will temporarily shutter operations in Casablanca this week given the lack of "clarity about integrating applications like Uber into the existing transport model". Like it has in numerous markets where it now operates, Uber has faced opposition from local taxi groups in Morocco who claim that the ride-hailing company's operations undercuts their business.

The move by Uber might surprise many as the company had signaled that it might sell its southeast Asia unit to a rival company called Grab.

The CEO said he sees the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo as a good opportunity to boost the company's business, noting that Japan is a huge taxi market.

The company, Uber Technologies Inc. has already terminated its service in Finland and Norway for the local regulatory framework to be changed in the countries. Although Uber has clashed with taxi rivals and regulators around the world, it has played by the rules in the archipelago, relegating its business to vehicle hires and a ride-sharing program for the elderly in a small rural town. The Sony Payment Service involvement will be to provide payment services for the new system. He was speaking with Roos, a co-founding partner at Geodesic Capital, an Uber investor.

Uber still faces an uphill battle in Japan. Toyota just poured about $70 million into the app creator JapanTaxi, and it's working on its own AI-centered taxi system. Uber says its business now serves more than 15 trillion trips per day, globally.

Uber stops Morocco service from 23rd of February, in efforts to bring the business in to the local regulators' line for assisting ride hailing based on its app.

Uber's CEO said Japan's taxi utilization rate is 30 percent, while Uber's is more than 50 percent.

Earlier in the year, Patrick Moulay, executive vice president for commercial helicopter sales, Bell Helicopter, said in an interview with Bloomberg, "Air taxi is the next way for our industry, and it's very important for us to make sure we are among the disrupters to think about what should be transportation in the next 10-20 years".
