"Why is A.G. Jeff Sessions asking the Inspector General to investigate potentially massive FISA abuse".
Sessions answered hours later, saying his department had taken the appropriate step and "will continue to do its work in a fair and impartial manner according to the law and Constitution".
But Sessions' attempt to strike the right tone in defending his department and his own response to allegations of the FBI's surveillance abuses in the Russian Federation investigation came as no comfort to the President.
White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the White House supports efforts to investigate the FISA program, which allows USA intelligence and law enforcement officials to obtain secret surveillance orders on Americans suspected of being foreign agents. You would have expected Sessions to be the ideological conscience of the administration and a close partner of the president, the Ed Meese of the Trump administration.
The inspector general, who has his own staff of lawyers and investigators, at least enjoys a measure of independence from the department. Isn't the I.G.an Obama guy?

The ongoing spat with Sessions is another reason the administration gives off a sense of teetering on the edge of a crisis, not because of exogenous events (we're experiencing peace and prosperity), but because of the ultimate endogenous factor - the president of the United States, without whom the administration wouldn't exist in the first place.
Special counsel is reportedly investigating...
Trump has privately bashed and tweet-trashed Sessions before, most notably when he was angry that Sessions had recused himself from the investigation now run by Robert Mueller. While The New York Times previously reported that the special counsel had been sniffing Trump's efforts to prevent Sessions from recusing himself in the Russian Federation probe, the latest news suggests that Mueller's inquiry has broadened to include a wide range of interactions between the president and his attorney general. Trump said in a tweet past year. But this time Jeff Sessions, the nation's top lawman, is pushing back. But unlike his past rebukes of Sessions, this time the attorney general responded.
"6. And by the way, the IG *is* a 'Justice Department lawyer'". Trump clearly fears the investigation will deny him the results he wants - a finding of abuse as claimed by his GOP House ally, Rep. Devin Nunes of California.
Trump said that Horowitz was "overdue" by completing a report on allegations of inappropriate behavior by former FBI director James Comey on how he handled the 2016 investigation into email practices of Trumps rival Democratic candidate in the Presidential Election, Hillary Clinton.
Justice Department veterans have long anxious that Trump's repeated public attacks on the department and the FBI are undermining the legitimacy of those agencies, which could have lasting damage to federal law enforcement.
