The salvo was the latest in a growing confrontation over Mueller's investigation, which is probing whether Trump's campaign colluded with Russian attempts to sway the 2016 election in his favor, but also whether the president sought to obstruct justice.
Andrew McCabe, the onetime Federal Bureau of Investigation deputy director long scorned by President Trump and just fired by the attorney general, kept personal memos regarding Trump that are similar to the notes compiled by dismissed Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey detailing interactions with him, The Associated Press has learned. Trump wrote on Twitter Friday. Another Dem recently added...does anyone think this is fair? "And yet, there is NO COLLUSION!".
White House legislative affairs director Marc Short downplayed Trump and Dowd's comments in an interview with moderator Margaret Brennan on CBS's "Face the Nation", saying neither Trump nor anyone else in the White House is suggesting not cooperating fully with the Mueller investigation.
Asked about Trump's tweets against Mueller, King said it is a huge mistake for the president and risky for the country.
Wisconsin's second district Democratic Congressman Mark Pocan made an offer to McCabe shortly after. "This would undoubtedly result in a constitutional crisis", he said.
On Sunday Trey Gowdy, the Republican chair of the US House of Representatives oversight committee, used an appearance on Fox News Sunday to advise: "If you have an innocent client, Mr Dowd, act like it".
Later in his statement, McCabe accused the president of driving an effort to destroy his reputation and hurt special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation. James Lankford, R-Okla., also speaking on ABC's This Week.

And despite many in the media running interference for McCabe, reliable sources say the Inspector General Office of Professional Responsibility had "tons of stuff" on him, and it had little to do President Donald Trump and a lot more to do with "power" and "control".
Trump may have felt emboldened after Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired McCabe on Friday. Comey's ouster paved the way for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to tap Mueller to lead the probe.
During Comey's tenure, McCabe oversaw the FBI's investigation into Clinton's use of a private email server while she served as secretary of state.
Dowd told the AP that he neither was calling on Rosenstein to fire the special counsel immediately nor had discussed with Rosenstein the idea of dismissing Mueller or ending the probe. "I don't believe there is any justification at this point for terminating the special counsel".
Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired McCabe late Friday night at the recommendation of Federal Bureau of Investigation officials, to the applause of Mr. Trump. "Their persistence in this campaign only highlights the importance of the special counsel's work". But Comey defended his former deputy and sent a warning to the president. Comey's book, "A Higher Loyalty", topped Amazon.com's best-seller list on Sunday.
The President also called into question news that McCabe had written memos about their interactions.
Hours after FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe was sacked, Comey tweeted, "Mr. President, the American people will hear my story very soon". I have long believed Trump is headed toward a confrontation with Mueller, and those who doubt he will finally take the plunge are making the mistake of judging Trump by the standards of a normal president and not his own demonstrated pathologies.
