Senator Ron Wyden asked Facebook to provide more information on what he called a "troubling" misuse of private data that could have been used to sway voters.

The drop in Facebook stock came after the New York Times and the Guardian reported that the firm, Cambridge Analytica, was able to tap the profiles of more than 50 million Facebook users without their permission.

Wylie told "Today" that while political ads are also targeted at specific voters, the Cambridge effort aimed to make sure people wouldn't know they were getting messages aimed at influencing their views.

Data from the Federal Election Commission show that Cambridge Analytica, the firm under fire for inappropriately obtaining Facebook data, earned $5.9 million in 2016 from the campaign to elect Donald Trump for president.

"(Tech companies) are going to get a lot more scrutiny over what data they are collecting and how they are using it", said Shawn Cruz, senior trading specialist at TD Ameritrade in Chicago.

Yet Cambridge boasted of its work after another client, Texas Republican Sen.

Facebook usually sends lawyers to testify to Congress, or allows trade organisations to represent it and other technology companies in front of lawmakers.

In total, Cambridge Analytica earned more than $16 million from 2014 to 2016 from almost 20 Republican candidates and political committees. Cambridge also didn't immediately respond to emailed questions.

Cambridge Analytica, the United Kingdom company accused of harvesting Facebook Inc. user profiles in its work for Donald Trump's presidential campaign, denied claims it engaged in improper tactics to sway elections that included the Brexit referendum.

Facebook shares plunged Monday as the social media giant faced an onslaught of criticism at home and overseas over revelations that a firm working for Donald Trump's presidential campaign harvested and misused data on 50 million members.

Reports in The Observer suggested that the information was used to target political advertising in the 2016 USA presidential election - something denied by CA.

Facebook said Friday it has suspended Cambridge Analytica and Cambridge professor Aleksandr Kogan, who created an app called "thisisyourdigitallife", a personality quiz that was billed as "a research app used by psychologists". "It is essential that people can have confidence that their personal data will be protected and used in an appropriate way".

"After it subsequently became known that GSR had broken its contract with Cambridge Analytica because it had not adhered to data protection regulation, Cambridge Analytica deleted all the Facebook data and derivatives, in cooperation with Facebook".

While Wylie said he doesn't know whether Trump's campaign used the techniques, he said Trump's former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski was meeting with Cambridge Analytica in 2015, before Trump even announced his run for office.

The head of the European Union's parliament says the bloc will investigate Facebook over the use of its data by a Trump-affiliated data-mining firm.
