"On March 25, the MyFitnessPal team became aware that an unauthorized party acquired data associated with MyFitnessPal user accounts in late February 2018", reads a press release detailing the breach. According to Under Armour, the app does not collect US Social Security or driver's licence numbers from users, so that information was not exposed. Under Armour hasn't commented on how the hack was carried out but says it's now cooperating with the police and data security firms.

Under Armor says it is working with law enforcement and data security experts to investigate the data breach.

According to reports, an unknown group of cybercriminals was able to steal data tied to around 150 million MyFitnessPal accounts. However, its likely they may not be considered strong enough in ensuring tech businesses take full responsibility of their part in securing the private data of all their users.

Accessed data included usernames, emails addresses, and hashed (encrypted) passwords.

Application users have been urged to change their passwords on all MyFitnessPal accounts and to review their accounts for suspicious activity.

According to Reuters, it's believed to be the largest data breach of 2018 and one of the five largest in us history.

As is often the case following data breaches, Under Armour said it is improving its security systems to prevent similar hacks from taking place in the future.

Yesterday evening, Under Armour told The Verge, "Four days after learning of the issue, the company began notifying the MyFitnessPal community via email and through in-app messaging".

Under Armour confirmed Thursday that millions of MyFitnessPal accounts have been compromised in a hacking incident that occurred last month.

The app rose in popularity at the same time as fitness trackers, like FitBits and Apple Watches, many of which can connect with the app.
