Sharif, for the first time, questioned Pakistan's policy to allow the "non-state actors" to cross the border and "kill" people in Mumbai as he publicly acknowledged in an interview that militant groups are active in the country. "He told me that he has not made such comments and his words have been misrepresented and taken out of context", Abbasi was quoted by Pakistan's Daily Times, as saying.

While talking to the media outside a court in Islamabad, Mr Sharif said, "What did I say that was wrong in the (Dawn) interview?" He said he did not say anything wrong although his spokesperson said the former PM, who was disqualified in July previous year on charges of corruption, said his statement was grossly misinterpreted.

Following the statement, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, led by Nawaz's brother Shehbaz Sharif, had stated that the Indian media had misreported the statement.

Meanwhile, the interview has stirred a storm as Indian media has turned his statement into a charge sheet against Pakistan for being involved in the Mumbai attacks. "Who introduced terrorism to this attractive country?"

The participants of the high-profile meeting, under the chair of Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, observed that it was very unfortunate that the opinion arising out of either misconceptions or grievances was being presented in disregard of concrete facts and realities.

"Do we want to let India use us for its own motives?"

The World Bank in a statement said, "In the past day, there have been media reports citing the World Bank's Remittances and Migration Report of 2016". "Nawaz Sharif is still our Quaid (supreme leader)", he said.

"Former president Pervez Musharraf, former interior minister Rehman Malik and former National Security Adviser Major-General (retd) Mehmood Durrani had already confirmed [what I said]", he added.

Abbasi said that he will not resign and complete the term.

He added that if forming a commission - like some elements of the opposition, as well as Nawaz Sharif, were demanding - to look into the remarks would serve the nation, then it should be set up.

The younger Sharif said "the state of Pakistan and all its institutions stand together in the global fight against terrorism". "India wasn't interested in a transparent investigation", he said.
