UCLA ranks as second-best public university nationwide, ninth in world

Phil Baty, the magazine's editorial director of global rankings, said America had improved its position with more top 100 institutions than a year ago, University World News reports.

The UK claims nine places, down from 10 past year.

Harvard came top of the Times Higher Education league table for the eighth year in a row, with MIT second and Stanford University third.

There are 21 countries represented in what seems to actually be a Top 105, as there are 25 universities in the 81-100 group.

Last year, Peking University joined it in the top 20.

Japan has five institutions across the top 100 (down from six), and four of these have declined.

The US once again dominated the list with 44 institutions in the top 100, while European institutions claimed 33 places in total. Canada saw some gains, with its three institutions slightly up: the University of Toronto at number 22 (up from 24), the University of British Columbia at 38 (from 40) and McGill University at 41 (from 42).

According to this year's World Reputation Rankings, there are just nine United Kingdom institutions in the top 100 - down from ten last year, with Durham falling out.

Among U.S. public universities, UCLA was behind only UC Berkeley, which was No. 6 overall.

"To be judged among the Top 100 most powerful university brands is a great source of pride for everyone at Hebrew University and for Israel as a whole", HU president Asher Cohen said.

"But their status is in no way guaranteed - all United Kingdom universities have either fallen down the global pecking order this year or stayed static".

On China's performance, THE's Editorial Director of Global Rankings Phil Baty said: "It seems that China's relentless march up the global league tables has stalled - at least when it comes to the worldwide prestige of its universities". This marks the first time since 2014 that an Israeli university has been included in this list, the university said in a statement.

The survey revealed that some of Europes top universities were vulnerable to a changing global higher education order, Baty stated. "This should produce a virtuous circle, where excellence drives improved reputation and improved reputation supports excellence - helping to attract more global talent, more prestigious worldwide partnerships and more inward investment".

Rankings are based on the assessments of more than 10,000 selected academics worldwide, who voted for what they thought were the top 15 universities for research and teaching.

Baty said: “It seems that Chinas relentless march up the global league tables has stalled – at least when it comes to the worldwide prestige of its universities. In 2017, Tsinghua University was ranked 48th, its first ever placing in the top 50.

"This new data shows just how hard it is for emerging powers to break into the traditional global elite", he said. The rankings are based on ratings by senior academics around the world.

Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore remains India's mainstay in the global university rankings.

The rankings and data collected in the survey will be considered when THE develops the World University Rankings for 2019, which will be released in September 2018. The full methodology can be found here.
