Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will meet Mr Trump on Monday, ahead of the summit held at 9am on Tuesday.

Kim was also quoted as saying that, "If the summit produces positive outcomes, then the Singaporean government's effort will be recorded in history forever".

Kim is scheduled to meet Trump at 9 a.m. local time on Tuesday to talk about ending his country's nuclear programme and transforming the isolated state which has been under harsh worldwide sanctions for its defiant arms programme.

Both Kim and Trump arrived in Singapore earlier on Sunday.

Mr Trump and Mr Kim have had an extraordinary up-and-down relationship over the past 18 months, trading insults and threatening war before abruptly changing tack and moving towards a face-to-face meeting.

Police have stepped up security around "special event areas" such as the summit's venue on Sentosa Island, and hotels where Trump and Kim are expected to stay.

He said on Thursday that he didn't think he had to prepare very much for the summit and that "it's about attitude".

A source told the South China Morning Post earlier that China could send fighter jets to escort Kim on the journey through its airspace.

Sears to close another 72 stores as sales plunge
The former retail giant reported a $424 million first-quarter loss and has identified at least 100 non-profitable stores. The company said it will close 72 stores as a part of its " ongoing efforts to streamline the company's operations ".

A CNN team was on the scene as Kim arrived at the St Regis Hotel Sunday.

The cost of the summit for Singapore was some $15 million, Singapore Prime Minister Lee told reporters Sunday at the media center the city-state had constructed to deal with the enormous worldwide demand.

Traveling with Kim were top officials including Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho and Kim Yong Chol, a close aide of Kim who has been instrumental in the diplomacy that culminated in Tuesday's summit.

This picture taken on December 21, 2017 and released from North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency shows North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un the 5th Conference of Cell Chairpersons of the Workers' Party of Korea in Pyongyang.

The two are due to meet on Tuesday on the resort island of Sentosa for their high-stakes summit, the first-ever talks between a USA and North Korean leader and the culmination of a head-spinning diplomatic dance.

But many, if not all analysts, say that this is highly unlikely, given how hard it has been for Mr Kim to build his programme and that the weapons are seen as the only protection he has. But the president has significantly softened the United States negotiating stance in the immediate run-up to the summit, accepting the prospect of an open-ended negotiations involving multiple future summits.

After leaving yesterday the G7 meeting in La Malbaie, Canada, Trump began a flight of about 20 hours to arrive in the city State where he will discuss with Kim about denuclearization.

There is also the question of what will become of North Korea's short and medium-range ballistic missiles, which has been a great concern for North Korea's neighbors, including Japan.

Just meeting with Trump will also give Kim a recognition North Korea has long sought, setting him up as global player and the leader of a country worthy of respect. "He's got an opportunity, the likes of which I think nearly - if you look into history - very few people have ever had".
