Murray said he took the decision "with regret" and thanked people for their messages of support.

The 31-year-old Scot made a comeback last month at Queen's Club following nearly a year out with the injury that required surgery in Australia in January.

Wimbledon received the news it didn't want: Andy Murray won't play in the tournament.

Now he will miss his home Grand Slam for the first time since a wrist injury kept him away in 2007.

Andy Murray's bid to overcome his hip injury and play at Wimbledon has ended in disappointment.

He faces Australian qualifier Alex Bolt in his first round match on Tuesday.

Andy Murray has been forced to drop out of Wimbledon due to a problem with his hip.

"I will start practicing on the hard courts from tomorrow and continuing with my rehab and recovery and I'm looking forward to the US hard-court season", Murray's statement read.

"There's certain things that are still tricky and things I'm still trying to work through", Murray said Saturday. "I didn't know how I was going to respond to playing five-set matches".

"If you've got nothing better to do the next two weeks and feel like coaching hit me up", he wrote on Instagram. I think the past couple of weeks have been beneficial. The 19-year-old was playing at Wimbledon for the second time after being given a wild card.

This week, again on grass, Murray beat fellow three-time major champion Stan Wawrinka, before losing to countryman Kyle Edmund.

Jason Jung from Chinese Taipei will replace Murray in the draw.
