The Mendocino Complex grew to span 290,692 acres (117,639 hectares) by Tuesday morning, with barely a third of it contained since two wildfires merged at the southern tip of the Mendocino National Forest, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) said.
Two blazes mercilessly charring northern California have grown so rapidly that they became the U.S. state's largest in recorded history Monday, authorities said.
The Ranch Fire, north of Clear Lake, over the last two days has spread five miles east, one to two miles north, and three miles south. Sunday it spread into the footprint of the Pawnee Fire that in June of this year burned 14,000 acres west and south of Indian Valley Reservoir north of Highway 20. The Mendocino Complex Fire is comprised of two neighboring fires that have scorched through thousands of acres each day and destroyed 75 homes.
"It is extremely fast, extremely aggressive, extremely risky", McLean continued.
It burned so furiously on July 26 that it created what is called a fire whirl.
Authorities have evacuated cabins in two communities in the Santa Ana Mountains in Orange County because of a fast-moving wildfire.
So-the Mendocino Complex wildfire just became the largest in California's history.
The Nevada County Strike Team, composed of engines from Ophir Hill Fire, Peardale Chicago Park Fire, Higgins Fire, Nevada County Consolidated Fire and Nevada City Fire is still assigned to the Ranch Fire on the Mendocino Complex. The Cedar fire in 2003, now the third-largest, devoured 273,246 acres in San Diego County, according to Cal Fire records.

According to a statement from Cal Fire, full containment is expected on September 1.
McLean and fire experts say it's impossible to surround a fire that large, especially with 17 other major fires requiring attention in the state. The current spate of wildfires happens to be within range of large Northern California lakes and the state's biggest river, McLean said. He also encouraged the clearing of trees to stop the fires from spreading. It's just 21% contained and is growing fast, jumping at least four creeks, a major road and a fire line in a six-mile stretch this weekend.
Fire crews from Australia and New Zealand arrived in California to help.
