According to the Washington Post, Harper has also been claimed by an unnamed team on revocable waivers.

The club also activated Carlos Martínez from the 10-day disabled list, optioned infielder Patrick Wisdom to Triple-A Memphis (opening a roster spot for Martínez) and moved outfielder Dexter Fowler from the 10-day disabled list to the 60-day DL.

The St. Louis Cardinals have claimed former Cardinals first baseman Matt Adams off waivers from the Washington Nationals.

The deals come three weeks after the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, and the Nationals aren't getting much in return. When the Nationals visited St. Louis recently, Carpenter reportedly denied Adams a taste of some homemade salsa that has become popular among Cardinals players.

Adams, Harper and Murphy were all pending free agents at the end of the 2018 season.

Adams previously played for the Cardinals for the first five and a half seasons of his career before being traded to the Braves in May 2017.

In 94 games this season, Adams amassed a .257 batting average with 18 home runs, 27 extra base hits and 48 RBIs.

Russell already is coping with a swollen knuckle on his middle left finger, and he could be destined for the 10-day disabled list to make room for when Murphy, who was acquired from the Nationals, arrives Wednesday.
