By 11 a.m. ET (1500 GMT) on Monday, Florence was about 1,240 miles (2,000 km) east-southwest of Cape Fear, North Carolina, and was a Category 4, the second-strongest on the Saffir-Simpson scale, the NHC said.
The governor held a press conference Sunday afternoon alongside state emergency response officials to update the state on the potential impacts Hurricane Florence can have on SC.
"Further strengthening is anticipated, and Florence is expected to be an extremely risky major hurricane through Thursday", the National Hurricane Center said.
Florence was upgraded twice Monday, from Category 3 to 4, prompting evacuation orders in coastal areas of North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
The National Hurricane Center announced Sunday morning that Florence escalated into a hurricane with winds reaching 75mph as it swirls across the Atlantic.
Delaware Gov. John Carney says state officials are closely monitoring the approach of Hurricane Florence, which is heading toward the USA for what forecasters said could be a direct hit on the Southeast toward the end of the week.

As of the 11 a.m. Saturday advisory, Florence had maximum sustained winds of 65 miles per hour and was moving to the west at 7 miles per hour.
Met Service said neither of the storms are a threat to Jamaica. Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune urged people to secure their homes but said it's too early to know if evacuations will be ordered.

The National Hurricane Center warned a hurricane hunter plane found the storm strengthening quickly.
Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency Saturday to give his state time to prepare for the possible arrival of a hurricane. At this point, it appears like it will be moving into the Central Caribbean by the middle to end of the week as Hurricane Isaac.
Tropical Depression Nine formed 1755 miles east of the Windward Islands Friday.
