A woman stabbed five people - including three newborn babies - and then slashed her wrist early Friday inside a New York City home that was apparently being used as an unlicensed neighborhood nursery for new mothers and their children, authorities said.

The unidentified woman, age 52, who also stabbed two adults in the predawn incident in the borough of Queens, was in stable condition, Juanita Holmes, assistant chief of patrol for the New York City Police Department, said at a news conference.

The injured infants ranged from three days to one-month old, police said.

One woman suffered multiple stab wounds to the torso, and a man was stabbed in the leg.

It was not immediately clear how many other children were at the center at the time of the assault. When they arrived they discovered three infants - two girls and a boy - as well as a daycare worker and one of the children's father had been stabbed.

Nine babies, along with some of their parents, had been in the center during the attack, she said.
