Pompeo is set to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang Sunday to discuss a second U.S.

National Foundation Day, also known as gaecheonjeol, is celebrated on October 3 in both the South and North to mark the establishment of the first Korean kingdom, Gojoseon, in 2333 B.C. The holiday is considered the founding date of the Korean race.

Pompeo's last trip to North Korea did not go well.

At an unprecedented June meeting with Trump, Kim pledged to work towards denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, but his actions have fallen short of Washington's demands for a complete inventory of its nuclear weapons and irreversible steps to give up an arsenal that potentially threatens the United States.

Pompeo will be pushing for progress on achieving the goal of denuclearisation that Trump and Kim agreed to only in vague terms at their summit in Singapore. "Things stand firmly in place, such as the sanctions ... remain in place". The invitation to return to Pyongyang to discuss North Korean denuclearization efforts was made during a meeting with North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho amid United Nations sessions last week.

A senior Blue House official, requesting anonymity to discuss sensitive issues, told reporters Wednesday that Seoul had initially thought that a Trump-Kim summit might happen after the November 6 US midterm elections, but the fact that Pompeo is visiting Pyongyang sooner than expected "sends a positive signal" that it might take place earlier.

Still, Trump expressed hope that a deal ultimately could be reached with North Korea.

"I'm optimistic that we'll come away from that with better understandings, deeper progress and a plan forward, not only for the summit between the two leaders but for us to continue the efforts to build out a pathway for denuclearisation", he said.

While speaking at a rally in Wheeling, West Virginia, over the weekend, Trump said that he and Kim "fell in love". In response, North Korea stated that declaring the end of the 1950-1953 Korean War "can never be a bargaining chip".

Pompeo is expected to lay the groundwork for a second summit between President Donald Trump and Kim.

"We're not playing the time game", Trump told reporters September 26.

"It is hard to know what is going on in North Korea, but what we can know is because a lot of countries in the world are trying to prevent North Korea from the world economy, this makes them extremely poor", Visiting Assistant Professor of Political Science Andrew Hart said.
