A tropical storm warning is now also in effect for Altamaha Sound, Georgia, to Duck, North Carolina, and Pamlico to Albemarle Sounds. County officials say they're not releasing names or other details yet while families are notified.

The storm has killed at least 11 people, mostly from trees falling onto houses. A driver in North Carolina was killed when a tree fell on his auto.

A day after the storm hit, Mexico Beach remained very hard to reach, with roads covered by fallen trees, power lines and other storm debris.

The third-most powerful hurricane to hit the USA mainland in recorded history left a wide path of destruction, destroying homes and shopping centres and felling trees that killed at least two people in Florida and Georgia.

More than 1.2 million homes and businesses were without power from Florida to Virginia on Thursday because of the storm.

The governors of North and SC urged residents to brace for heavy rain and storm-force winds as Michael plowed northward up the Atlantic seaboard.
