Tesla says the new chip, developed in-house, is the first designed specifically to run such artificial-learning neural networks and that it uses the same connectors and dimensions as the Nvidia chip the company now uses, so owners can have it swapped directly. Funding secured, " Musk said in the tweet.

He agreed to step down as chairman of the company, and he and Tesla must now pay $20m in fines within 14 days.

After electric cars, space rockets, tunnel-boring technology and high-speed transportation systems, Elon Musk appears to be branching into booze.

The SEC probe was triggered by Musk's August 7 tweet that he had "funding secured" to take Tesla private.

Musk is Tesla's biggest shareholder by far.

The purchase will deepen Musk's already substantial stake in Tesla-though perhaps not by too much, in a mathematical sense.

Furthermore, the document states that Musk will have to "comply with all mandatory procedures implemented by Tesla" regarding communications relating to the firm, including in social media, press releases, and even investor calls.

The company a year ago hired AI expert Andrej Karpathy to work alongside former Apple chip designer Pete Bannon and develop a new chip optimized specifically for Tesla's own neural network algorithms.

The settlement has been approved by U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan in Manhattan.

Musk replied to a Financial Times tweet without elaborating. However, one requirement of the settlement amongst others was to appoint a neutral Chairman on the company's Board; the reason being initiating additional oversight on the part of Mr. Musk. "That's our goal. I think we made really good progress in that direction. the drive unit that is going out now and for the last several months have been excellent". Tesla has until November 13 to appoint an independent chairman.

Musk said the base version of the Model 3 will being production in early 2019.
