Yet he also indicated officials were aware of inconsistencies in the Saudi story so far: "We have our eyes wide open", he said.

Turkish officials say the Turkish president and his American counterpart have spoken over the phone and discussed the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. They say they are in possession of audio and video evidence to back up the claim but have not released any proof.

Khashoggi, who had been living in self-imposed exile in the USA, was reported missing hours after he entered the Saudi consulate to obtain paperwork that would allow him to marry his Turkish fiancée.

Both the consulate and the residence of the Saudi consul have been searched too.

-Oct. 20: Saudi Arabia for the first time acknowledges Khashoggi was killed in the consulate, claiming he was slain in a "fistfight".

Several countries, including Germany, Britain, France and Turkey, have pressed Riyadh to provide all the facts, and Chancellor Angela Merkel said Berlin would not export arms to Saudi Arabia while uncertainty over Khashoggi's fate persisted. Two of Mohammed's close advisers were among those fired.

A pro-government Turkish newspaper is reporting that a member of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's entourage made four calls to the royal's office from the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul the day Jamal Khashoggi was killed.

He also asserted that Saudi Arabia is determined to find the truth and is now investigating the killing of the journalist.

U.S. President Donald Trump, who has said the United States would consider sanctions against Saudi Arabia, emphasized on Saturday that he was not satisfied with the Saudis' handling of the case. The prince announced plans for a $500 billion sci-fi city called Neom that would have more robots than humans, and said the country was returning to "moderate" Islam and meant to "eradicate" extremism.

It wasn't clear if the German government also plans to block arms exports to Saudi Arabia that it previously approved.

"If it weren't for the kindness of God I would have been (another) victim", Sharif said in a tweet. But their back-channel relationship unnerved many in the Trump administration and Washington foreign policy establishment who feared that the White House was betting too big on the crown prince.

This is Tennessee Republican Bob Corker, chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, speaking to CNN on Sunday.

U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres, the European Union and numerous European officials condemned Khashoggi's killing and called for a thorough and transparent investigation, with accountability for those involved. "The information available about events in Istanbul is inadequate".

"We don't know, in terms of details, how".

"The president conveyed his concerns about the case, and said that Indonesia hopes that the investigation will be conducted transparently and thoroughly", Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi said. "This is not an explanation; it is a cover-up", Mr. Ryan said.

Saudi officials had initially said the journalist left the consulate unharmed on October 2, but on Friday - under intense pressure to explain Khashoggi's whereabouts, admitted for the first time that he was dead. You said, they want a month? This is not an explanation; it is a coverup.
