She further said, as the Grassley letter indicated, "that (1) she "just wanted to get attention"; (2) "it was a tactic"; and (3) 'that was just a ploy'".

Once the Senate Judiciary Committee staff heard Judge Kavanaugh's denial and learned Monro-Leighton's identity, they began to do some research into her past.

Kavanaugh was narrowly confirmed to the Supreme Court by a vote of 50-48 on October 6 after a contentious political event unfolded on Capitol Hill the likes of which had not been seen before. Swetnick also made several contradictory statements about her claims during television interviews and refused to speak with committee investigators, the letter said.

When they finally spoke with her Thursday, she claimed she wasn't Jane Doe - but had heard about the letter and claimed to be Jane Doe so it would get more attention.

In the letter sent to FBI Director Christopher Wray and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Republican Sen. I am not Jane Doe. but I did read Jane Doe's letter.

Grassley also referred Judy Munro-Leighton for lying to Congress and obstructing the committee's investigation. When asked by Committee investigators whether she had ever met Judge Kavanaugh, she said: "Oh Lord, no".

A woman named Munro- Leighton came forward and said she was the author of that Jane Doe letter.

One person interviewed who claimed to know Ford said she did drugs on occasion, but she did not specify what kind of drugs.

Dealing with more false allegations ...

Grassley last month requested that the FBI investigate accuser Julie Swetnick and her attorney, Michael Avenatti, who also represents porn star Stormy Daniels in her allegations against President Trump.

The Senate Judiciary leader mentioned the seriousness behind the false claims made against Kavanaugh.

Grassley said looking into Munro-Leighton's claims diverted resources on a time-sensitive manner.

He went on to warn that those providing false information to incriminate Kavanaugh have likely broken the law - indicating that they will probably face charges of their own in the near future. Such acts are not only unfair; they are potentially illegal. "It is illegal to obstruct Committee investigations".

President Trump seized on the report Saturday, calling her "a vicious accuser". Trump exclaimed on Twitter Saturday.

The Supreme Court says new Justice Brett Kavanaugh won't take the traditional walk down the courthouse steps after his ceremonial installation on the court because of security concerns. "Where are the Dems on this?"

At the rally, Trump also attacked Montana Democratic Sen. The letter included a story about Kavanaugh and another male groping, sexually assaulting and ultimately raping a woman in a vehicle after a party.

"What about the others?" he asked.

Throughout the process, Kavanaugh - a married father of two daughters and a highly respected judge on the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit - vehemently denied all such accusations and maintained his innocence.

The allegations came amid a number of other stories from women, including Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, who claimed Kavanaugh had assaulted them when they were in high school or college. "She has stood by her charges - despite denials by Kavanaugh under oath".

The original accusation was made in a September 19 letter to Sen.

In September, President Trump ordered a limited Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into allegations by Ford and accuser Deborah Ramirez.
