Canada says 13 citizens detained in China since Huawei CFO arrest

A renewal of United States travel advisory of January 2018 brought a stern warning for American citizens traveling to China.

By way of comparison, there are nearly 900 Canadians in a similar situation in the U.S.

The warning comes after China last month detained two Canadians on charges of activities that endanger China's security.

December 9: China summons the American ambassador to China to lodge similar complaints about Meng's case and demand the USA rescind the order for her arrest.

The warning comes as three USA citizens were accused of committing "economic crimes" and barred from leaving China in November.

Tensions with China increased after Canadian police arrested Huawei Technologies Co Ltd's chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, on December 1 in Vancouver at the request of the United States.

"Without a doubt, these two Canadian citizens in China violated our country's laws and regulations, and are now undergoing investigation according to procedure", Zhang Jun, China's prosecutor general, said.

Canada has called the detentions "deeply concerning" and "arbitrary", and demanded the immediate release of the two men.

"We wanted to let them know that there have been more risks from what China has done in terms of folks traveling there and not being permitted to return", Pompeo told Fox News host Sean Hannity.

Ottawa has repeatedly said it sees no explicit link between the arrest of Meng and the detentions of Canadian citizens. They have only been granted limited access to Canadian consular services.

"It is the United States that has blocked the entry of Chinese citizens for various reasons, conducting investigations without reason", Lu said.

"U.S. citizens may be subjected to prolonged interrogations and extended detention for reasons related to 'state security.' Security personnel may detain and/or deport US citizens for sending private electronic messages critical of the Chinese government". She has been released on bail and is living in an upscale Vancouver home in advance of her extradition hearing.
