The earth's shadow moves across the Super Blood Wolf Moon during the start of a total lunar eclipse on January 20, 2019, in San Jose, Costa Rica. And the "wolf" refers to the time of year; a wolf moon is the traditional name for January's full moon.
This unique total lunar eclipse ended early Monday at 1:51 a.m. ET.
The entire eclipse will exceed three hours.
The moon didn't go completely dark, but glowed a slightly red tint as "a result of sunlight being filtered and bent through the Earth's atmosphere", similar to a sunset.

Sunday night, the Earth will slide directly between the moon and the sun, creating a total lunar eclipse.
CNN's George Engels shared images of the lunar eclipse taken by his father William on an iPhone between 2.25 and 2.40 am from La Carolina, 12 miles west of Maldonado, Uruguay.
And January's full moon is traditionally known as the Wolf Moon.
Besides the Americas, the entire lunar extravaganza could be observed, weather permitting, all the way across the Atlantic to parts of Europe. The United States missed out on the longest total lunar eclipse of the century, which happened in July 2018. But the moon's orbit is tilted a little bit compared to the Earth's, so usually when the moon is full, the Earth's shadow passes a little bit above or a little bit below it.
