Last week, the Trump administration allegedly requested that Israel publicly endorse the U.S.'s efforts to force Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to resign and to back Guaido as the interim president.

Mr Maduro cruised to reelection last May amid low turnout and allegations of vote buying by the government.

Maduro's assertion was based on reports that Vice President Mike Pence had promised to support Guaidó only days before the opposition leader declared himself to be in charge of the country.

When asked about contacts with Guaido, he said there hadn't been any.

The Venezuelan president also denounced an alleged conspiracy aimed at spreading rebellion in the army, saying thousands of messages were being sent to soldiers every day over WhatsApp and other social media platforms from neighboring Colombia.

"Australia recognises and supports the President of the National Assembly, Juan Guaido, in assuming the position of interim president, in accordance with the Venezuelan constitution and until elections are held", Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne said in a statement.

"They should withdraw this ultimatum".

At a United Nations Security Council debate last Saturday, Russia and China strongly backed Mr Maduro and rejected calls by the US, Canada, Latin American nations and European powers for early elections.

Venezuela's power struggle turns to winning military favor

Oil prices fell on Monday after U.S. energy firms added rigs for the first time this year in a sign that crude production there may rise further, and as China, the world's second-largest oil user, reported additional signs of an economic slowdown.

The warning didn't address specific groups or individuals, but Bolton noted in a linked tweet that Cuba's "support and control over Maduro's security and paramilitary forces" was well known.

As Venezuela's chaotic political crisis unfolds, President Nicolas Maduro is alleging the United States orchestrated a coup to remove him from the helm of the embattled nation.

Pope Francis, winding up a trip to Panama, said he was praying that "a just and peaceful solution is reached to overcome the crisis, respecting human rights".

Reuters reported last Friday that private military contractors who do secret missions for Russian Federation flew into Venezuela to beef up security for Mr Maduro. "Either you stand with the forces of freedom, or you're in league with Maduro and his mayhem".

He accused Russian Federation and China of "propping up a failed regime in the hopes of recovering billions of dollars in ill-considered investments and assistance made over the years".

Crude oil production, the authority said, reached 11.7 million bpd as of December 2018, with exports at 2.4 million bpd on average during the same month, flat on November but a lot stronger than in the first months after the removal of the oil export moratorium.

"We expect USA crude oil prices to range between $50-$60 per barrel in 2019 and about $10 more per barrel for Brent", Tortoise Capital Advisors said in its 2019 oil market outlook.
