China's economic interests in Venezuela made it impossible to accept a representative from the opposition Juan Guaido camp - even if it meant not hosting the Inter-American Development Bank's annual meeting, a Chinese analyst says. And as President Trump said on Tuesday, the United States can be "a lot tougher if we need to".

Mr Guaido said that Mr Marrero had been taken by Sebin, the Venezuelan intelligence agency, and was being detained at an unknown location.

Guaido tweeted that he did not know where Marrero was, adding: "He must be released immediately".

So far their power struggle has hit an impasse, with Maduro railing daily about the USA "imperialists" trying to dislodge him and Guaido touring the country to rally supporters and pledging he'll be taking over "very soon".

The Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) on Friday called off next week's meeting of its 48 member countries in China after Beijing refused to allow a representative of Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido to attend, two sources with knowledge of the matter said.

CARICOM leaders at their inter-sessional summit in St Kitts and Nevis last month had reiterated their position of non-interference in the internal affairs of Venezuela and said they were prepared to mediate in the process to bring about a peaceful resolution to the crisis. The region has been far from united in joining the USA call for the ouster of President Nicolas Maduro. He also said some Venezuelan intelligence chiefs called him to say they weren't involved, in what would suggest a split in their ranks.

Maduro's forces have reinforced obstacles blocking a border bridge linking Venezuela and Colombia to prevent Guaido's supporters trucking in U.S. aid.

Guaido contends that he is the rightful leader of Venezuela and that Maduro's re-election past year was illegitimate because major opposition figures were not allowed to run.

Eva Golinger, a Venezuelan-American lawyer and journalist who served as an adviser to late President Hugo Chavez, says there is support for Maduro.

OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro said he condemned Marrero's "arbitrary arrest" and demanded his immediate release.

The United States has cautioned Maduro against laying a finger on Guaido or National Assembly deputies, threatening unspecified repercussions.

According to Venezuelan Interior Minister Nestor Reverol, the aide to the self-declared "interim president" Juan Guaido was part of a terrorist cell that planned attacks in the country and was linked with foreign mercenaries. In early 2019, Maduro tried to move over one billion dollars out of Venezuela via BANDES to its subsidiary in Uruguay, Banco Bandes Uruguay S.A.

Under President Trump, the United States will continue to stand with the people of Venezuela as they reclaim their birthright of libertad. The U.S. has imposed oil sanctions on Venezuela as well as individuals linked to President Nicolas Maduro in an attempt to force him from power.
