If he emerges from the increasingly crowded field of Democratic candidates, Buttigieg would become the first openly gay nominee from a major party.

His speech drew from personal experience to emphasize how decisions in Washington affect individuals: Medicaid helped his father when he was in the hospital and a single Supreme Court vote allowed his marriage to exist.

The town hall spurred a spike in Google searches and donations to the Buttigieg campaign.

Buttigieg described the values guiding his presidential campaign as "simple enough to fit on a bumper sticker".

Regarding freedom, he spoke about racial justice, empowering teachers, women's equality, organized labor and living life as one chooses.

"Take it from Chasten and me - you're not free if your county clerk gets to tell you who you ought to marry due to their political and religious beliefs", he said.

Two other big city mayors addressed the crowd.

"Vice President, it has moved me closer to God", Buttigieg said.

Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont unveiled a revamped version of his "Medicare for All" plan on Wednesday, shaking up the 2020 presidential race by renewing his call for replacing job-based and private health insurance with a government plan that guarantees coverage for all. "The forces changing our country today are tectonic".

Bookmakers have Donald Trump as an overwhelming favourite to win four more years in the White House and Buttigieg remains an outsider to even be on the Democratic ticket.

Many in the crowd wore square "Pete 2020" stickers.

Buttigieg will make the announcement on Sunday at Studebaker Building 84, a newly renovated mixed-use building that once housed Studebaker, an auto-manufacturing company that was headquartered in South Bend until it shuttered in 1963.

"I see what he's done in our community", said Kate Mishler, a supporter living in South Bend".

Zhao has been sending his friends in China links to videos of Buttigieg's interviews and speeches, only to see his effort thwarted by the fact that YouTube has always been blocked by the Beijing government.

Bernie Sanders had thousands of dollars in credit card debt listed on his disclosure forms until 2016. The uptick in interest among Democratic heavyweights has followed a similar uptick in polls, where Buttigieg has gone from receiving less than 1% of support to solidly standing among candidates like Sens.

The question now, as both men pursue the presidency, is whether Buttigieg, at 9% to Booker's 3% in the latest Monmouth University Poll, and posting $7 million in first quarter fundraising to Booker's $5 million - saved himself the trip of a dusty tour of duty in the cloakrooms of the U.S. Senate by simply staying locally grounded in a Trump-insane environment. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Cory Booker, D-N.J., according to an ABC News Analysis.

Williams-Preston says she hopes that if Buttigieg becomes president, he would take the lessons he learned in South Bend forward.

He continued: "The problem is that they are telling us to look for greatness in all of the wrong places, because if there is one thing that the city of South Bend has shown it's that there is no such thing as an honest politics that revolves around the word 'Again'". "It is about whether we maintain a dysfunctional system which allows the top five health insurance companies to make over $20 billion in profits a year ago", Mr. Sanders said Wednesday in a statement. Steve Adler, the mayor of Austin, Texas, endorsed him and said it seemed as though "the world is arriving in South Bend".

The South Bend mayor, a Rhodes scholar and Afghanistan War veteran who has been essentially campaigning since January, has joined a dozen-plus rivals vying to take on President Donald Trump.

With a name that's challenging to pronounce (boot-edge-edge, or Buddha-judge as the candidate's husband has suggested), Buttigieg has been traveling through early primary and caucus states and sitting for just about any television interview he can find.

"There's a lot more to security than putting up a wall from sea to shining sea", he said.
