CHARLOTTE, N.C. -Reports of shots fired on a North Carolina university campus Tuesday prompted a lockdown and chaotic scenes in North Carolina's largest city.
Baker, chief of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte's Police & Public Safety agency, said swift intervention by authorities prevented a shooting on campus from claiming more lives.
The lockdown remained in place until nearly 10 p.m., and the remaining people on campus were allowed to leave shortly before 11 p.m.
It was not immediately known whether the victims were students, educators or staff.
Videos retweeted by local media show students running and walking away from the building where the shooting occurred and police running toward the building, as well as a high concentration of emergency vehicles, including helicopters flying overhead.
Spenser Gray, a junior, said she was in a campus building near where the shooting happened watching another student's presentation when they were alerted to the shooting.
Students on the campus spent a harrowing night as police searched door-to-door for any other suspects, not giving people the all-clear to move around till nearly dawn.
Baker said there was an increased police presence on campus Tuesday afternoon because of a Last Day of Classes concert featuring rapper Waka Flocka Flame.
